Raise the Platform 21 June 2014 – community access

The crew of Raise the Platform have conducted some great interviews since first going to air on SYN in July 2013.

Here is another … a chat with Kathryn Beaton about her Guide Dog, Zeke.

Zeke has a Facebook page here (of course!) and you can stay up to date with the Jazzy the Adventure Chair here too!

Raise the Platform is a seasonal program at SYN Media that began as Diversity Program with the support of YDAS

Our Diversity Programs provide a unique mix of confidence building, life and job-ready skills and a platform for your voice in the community.

Working to make SYN Media Learning as accessible as possible.

Tim Hammond (Access Trainer) and Danae Gibson (Access Programming Manager) check out the closest Super Stop available to participants in the Radio Intensive Training workshops held at SYN in July.

SYN Media, in collaboration with Youth Disability Advocacy Services (YDAS), led 14 young people through the initial stages of making media over three exciting days of workshops.

The first challenge was to make sure the training space was accessible by wheelchair (hence the cheesy pic at the Tram Super Stop).

SYN is a fantastic training space for young people but we are resident in an old Carlton building with narrow stairs and no lift.

For the YDAS workshops we used a space in the beautiful Emily McPherson Building, complete with state-of-the-art audio-visual tools.

We are also working to adapt our Training Manual and provided an audio manual before the course began.

The next stage of the project  is the debut of  Raise The Platform, a weekly one hour radio program produced and presented by the workshop participants who have declared the show “a platform for young people to advocate for, and share experiences of, young people with disabilities.”

Our Access Programs provide a unique mix of confidence building, life and job-ready skills and a platform for your voice in the community.  Call or email Access Programming Coordinator, Danae Gibson, to find out more.
